Feeding Babies Evaporated Milk: Myths vs Facts

Read the answer first. The Workshop is here only when you want the next step.

Parent keeps evaporated milk separate from an infant's prepared formula during feeding preparation.

As a parent, one of the key concerns you may have is about your baby’s diet, especially when it comes to milk choices. One question that often arises is about the suitability of evaporated milk for babies. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Understanding Evaporated Milk

Evaporated milk is a type of milk product that has undergone a process to remove about 60% of its water content, making it more concentrated than regular milk. The evaporation process also gives it a slightly caramelized flavor and darker color.

Can I Give My Baby Evaporated Milk?

Evaporated milk is not recommended as a primary source of nutrition for babies, especially those under the age of 12 months. This is because it lacks the necessary nutrients found in breastmilk or formula that are crucial for a baby’s growth and development. Furthermore, evaporated milk has high concentrations of sugar and protein, which may not be suitable for a baby’s digestive system.

When is it Appropriate to Use Evaporated Milk?

Evaporated milk can be used in cooking or baking for older babies and toddlers, as part of a varied and balanced diet. However, it should not replace breastmilk or formula in the diet of children under one year.

Best Milk Options for Babies

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, with continuation of breastfeeding for one year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant. If breastfeeding is not possible, iron-fortified infant formula is a suitable alternative.

Evaporated Milk Vs. Formula or Breast Milk

  • Can evaporated milk be substituted for formula? No, evaporated milk cannot be a replacement for infant formula. Baby formula is specifically designed to meet a baby’s nutritional needs, which evaporated milk does not fulfil.
  • Can you replace baby formula with evaporated milk with water? It is not advisable to replace baby formula with a mix of evaporated milk and water. Evaporated milk doesn’t contain the necessary nutrients required for a baby’s growth and development.
  • What is a natural alternative to baby formula? The best natural alternative to baby formula is breast milk. If breastfeeding isn’t possible, consult with a pediatrician for suitable alternatives.

Appropriate Age for Introducing Evaporated Milk

  • Can 9-month-old have evaporated milk? For infants under 12 months, the primary diet should consist of breast milk or formula. Evaporated milk doesn’t provide the essential nutrients required at this age.
  • Is evaporated milk good for 1 year old? Evaporated milk can be used in small quantities in cooking or baking for children over a year old, but it shouldn’t replace whole milk.
  • Can my 1-year-old drink powdered milk? After a baby turns 1, it’s generally safe to introduce cow’s milk, including powdered milk, but always check with your pediatrician first.

Alternatives When Out of Baby’s Usual Milk

  • What can I give my toddler when out of milk? If you run out of milk, water and a balanced meal can be given to a toddler. However, milk should be replaced as soon as possible due to its nutritional value.
  • What can I give my baby if out of formula? If you run out of formula, it’s important to get more as soon as possible. In a serious emergency, you might use an emergency homemade formula, but you should get professional advice first.
  • What do you feed a baby in an emergency? In an emergency, contact a healthcare professional immediately for advice. Some guidance suggests diluted cow’s milk, but this should only be in a dire emergency and on a temporary basis.

Other Milk-Related Questions

  • What milk is closest to breast milk? No cow’s milk or plant-based milk is identical to breast milk. However, formula is designed to mimic the nutritional composition of breast milk.
  • Can 1-year-old drink 2% milk? It’s recommended to offer whole milk to children until the age of 2 because of the necessary fats for brain development. However, consult your pediatrician if you’re considering 2% milk.
  • Can I give my 9-month-old gallon milk? For babies under 12 months, the main source of nutrition should be breast milk or formula. Cow’s milk, including gallon milk, is not recommended as the primary drink for this age group.

Hi Mary-Ann. I have a question: Is method in any way similar to the ones recommended by Dr Bucknam, Dr. Weissbluth or Dr. Karp? We tried those but none of them help.

Mary-Ann SchulerBabySleepMiracle.com

Hi Regina, thank you for your question. The short answer is no. The techniques I share in my guide are based on newest scientific research and this is why I have never seen any approach similar to the one I recommend.

Mirella CruzEl Paso, TX

This method really works! I tried it on my son Jesus and after just one week he went from waking up more than 5 times a night to waking up just once or twice. You are a lifesaver, Mary-Ann!

Judy LeeFremont, CA

I'm truly impressed with how much information you share in your video. And all for free! I can feel that you truly care about mothers like myself, and that's hard to find these days. I have recommended your site to several of my friends already.

Chloe JacksonLansing, MI

Mary-Ann, our child suffers from autism. Is your approach still suited?

Mary-Ann SchulerBabySleepMiracle.com

Chloe, I made sure my method can be used with any child, even babies who are special like yours. Please note that I'm not a doctor and that I always advice to consult with your physician because nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of your love.

Hallo Mary-Ann, I'm from Germany. Do you have your guide in German?

Mary-Ann SchulerBabySleepMiracle.com

Hello Heide, we do! Normally you should already see our video in German. If not, please contact our support so they can guide you

Thenk you for your answer, Mary-Ann!

I just completed your approach and I have to say, it worked almost too well. Yes, it took a bit of getting used to with your bedtime routine but the difference is huge. My son George used to take 1 hours to go down and now he's firmly asleep in no more than 10 minutes! You're the best!

Richard ConnerSchaumburg, IL

It seems I'm the only man watching this video, lol! What you shared about the 'emotional backpack' made immediate sense to me and I can't wait to help my little girl Mila to unpack it!

Kaylee NicholasCanton, OH

Hey there, just discovered your site and this really sounds different. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing :)

Genesis HudsonBismarck, North Dakota, ND

For everyone who's still thinking about getting Mary-Ann's guide I want to advise you to go ahead. I wasn't sure myself but now I'm so thankful I invested in this program. It made a huge difference in our life as a family and yes, my baby girl does sleep through the night now.
