With a new baby comes many changes. A baby changes everything: your life’s priorities, your personality, and don’t forget your overall schedule. A baby even affects your…sleep? Here’s a wake up call: there’s no more uninterrupted 8 hours of sleep to be had when you become a mother or father.

1. Rotate care taking in shifts at night.

Maybe your grandma can come over during the day to help and your cousin or best friend can help you a few hours at night.   • Assuming mom and dad live in the same household, take turns on a nightly basis putting the baby to bed.

  • Caretaking shifts can last anywhere from 2-3 hours where that person is exclusively responsible for baby maintenance such as feedings, diaper changes, and helping to soothe the child back to sleep if he or she wakes up.
  • If you live alone with your newborn, have a couple family members or friends bunk with you for a week or two to rotate care taking shifts and help you get used to caring for your new baby.

2. Show your baby the difference between day and night.

A vital step in conquering your newborn’s 1 month sleep regression is to show your baby the difference between day and night. Displaying these cues will help your little one to figure out when it is time to be awake and when it is time to rest.

  • Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to let in sunlight.
  • Go outside and take walks with your newborn in the stroller so he or she can see the light.
  • Surround your newborn with family and discussions during the day.
  • Draw the curtains and blinds closed at night.
  • Keep the lighting very dim in the nursery.
  • Only let white noise play in the background at night. Tell other family members living at home to keep their voices quiet to help the baby sleep.

When baby has experienced multiple stimulating activities during the day, it can become easier for him or her to fall asleep and stay asleep just a little longer even during the 1 month sleep regression stage. Sure, feedings and diaper changes will still happen at night. However, follow these tips to help your baby have more fun during the day and more sleep during the night.

How to Accomplish This:

  • Sing interactive and upbeat songs with your baby such as Pat-a-Cake and Baby Bumble Bee.
  • Read your baby books throughout the day or before nap time and/or before bed time.
  • Place your baby on play gym to look in a mirror at himself or herself or to try reaching for hanging toys.
  • Talk to your baby about your day and about their actions. Ask questions and keep the interaction going. Baby may not be able to answer you just yet, but this is great for language development.
  • Give your newborn lots of opportunities for tummy time at about 5 minutes at a time. Repeat as you’d like throughout the day.
  • Give your baby a bath at night to help soothe their body to rest.
  • When putting on baby lotion after a bath, give your baby a gentle massage.
  • Sing soothing lullabies to your baby throughout your bed time routine.
  • Leave your baby’s last feeding for the day right before bed to relax him or her to sleep.
  • Rock him or her lightly. This is what your baby was used to in the womb. Rocking can be a great way to tame the 1 month sleep regression.

As you continue to allow stimulation during the day and calming at night, the more your baby will come to realize what is expected of them as they get older. Eventually the 1 month sleep regression will dissipate.

4. Limit the duration of daytime naps.

As parents, it is only natural that you would want to get your baby used to sleeping through the night. Babies enduring the 1 month sleep regression are not going to be sleeping through the night just yet. However, you can limit the duration of daytime naps so that your baby is more encouraged to sleep during the night and stop the effects of the 1 month sleep regression. You can do this by:

  • Allowing your baby to nap when or she wants to nap. Newborns at this age need about 16-18 hours of sleep total.
  • If your baby starts to sleep close to 3 hours in one sitting, wake him or her up to do a different activity. This is especially suggested if this happens during a late afternoon nap. You don’t want your baby finally getting to sleep for the night too close to midnight.
  • Otherwise, do not wake your child during a nap. He or she will wake naturally when ready.

Sleep is important for brain development and growth for an infant so helping your baby to get ample sleep will be beneficial in the long run.

5. Momma and papa, be sure to get your sleep as well.

Even though as a parent you put the needs of your child ahead of your own all the time, you must take care of yourself too. Be sure you get enough sleep at night by:

  • Give yourself some personal time at night to do what you want like take a bath to relax, do your favorite hobby, or catch up on a favorite television show.
  • Once your personal time is over, set a bed time for yourself. Try to have your bed time close to your baby’s bed time for when the witching hour starts with all the night wakings.
  • To help you sleep, diffuse essential oils, listen to soothing bed time music, journal, or read. These are all activities bound to help you go to sleep naturally.
  • Try not to have a lot of screen time before bed so it is easier for you to fall asleep.


Being a new parent means keeping on your guard for the unexpected but having fun during the process, too. You’ll look back on this experience when you future seven year old son or daughter is asleep in your own room and just smile. There’s more sleep regressions to come besides the 1 month sleep regression, but at least you will start getting the practice you need.
